Mackenzie Longpre is a drummer and composer active in Toronto’s music scene. He has studied jazz drums with Jim Blackley, Bob McLaren, and Terry Clarke, classical percussion with John Rudolph, and jazz piano with Frank Falco. He also spent a year studying with bassist Jim Vivian. As an honors graduate of the University of Toronto jazz program, Mackenzie has been given the opportunity to perform with Ralph Bowen, David Braid, Jeff Coffin, Alex Dean, Jim Lewis, Nick Marchione, Paul Novotny, John Patitucci, Rich Perry, Terry Promane, Tim Ries, Chase Sanborn, Maria Schneider, Dave Smith, Gary Smulyan, Don Thompson, Jim Vivian, and Geoff Young.

Mackenzie is a part of many exciting projects and ensembles. He’s the drummer for Banners, Tara Kannangara Group, Shafton Thomas Group, Chloe Charles, Teri Parker, Alex Tait, Grannis Bea, Melanie Brulée, The Henrys, The St. Royals, The Spandettes, The Trust, Circles, Undrcovr, and Hush. Mackenzie has been a sideman on performances and recordings with the likes of Colleen Allen, Robi Botos, Rich Brown, Alex Dean, Chris Donnelly, Mike Downes, Andrew Downing, Dan Fortin, Alex Goodman, Justin Gray, Ingrid and Christine Jensen, Molly Johnson, Anne Lindsay, Kirk McDonald, Mike Murley, David Occhipinti, PJ Perry, Terry Promane, Marc Rogers, Chase Sanborn, John Sheard, Elizabeth Shepherd, and Jim Vivian.

In 2006 Mackenzie was chosen as the drummer in the Yamaha All-Star Band, and was selected as the drummer for the 2009 National Jazz Awards Big Band. He received the Zildjian Outstanding Drumset Player Award in 2006. Mackenzie was also awarded the Zildjian Avedis Percussion Scholarship in 2008 and 2009, and the Duke Ellington Society Scholarship in 2009. He is currently one of three finalists for the Toronto Arts Council’s “2015 Emerging Jazz Artist Award.” Mackenzie appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Banners in January 2016. As a member of Tara Kannangara Group, he was nominated for a Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album Of The Year.

Along with work as a sideman and co-leader, Mackenzie leads his own ensemble playing his original compositions. He has released a full-length album summer house, and an EP A Failed Entertainment.
